Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jaka Repič

Jaka Repič, born in 1975 in Ljubljana, holds a PhD in ethnology and is an associate professor of social and cultural anthropology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. At the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, he teaches methodological subjects and subjects related to urban anthropology, anthropology of violence, migration, and ethnology of Australia and Oceania. He is the co-coordinator of the Joint Master's Program Creole: Cultural Differences and Transnational Processes. He was head of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology (2017-2021) and chair of the Faculty of Arts' Executive Board (2018-2021).

His research interests include transnational migration, urban anthropology, the Slovenian diaspora in Argentina, identifications, anthropology of art, environmental anthropology, and, more recently, the issue of mass graves. He has conducted ethnographic research in Papua New Guinea, Slovenia, Argentina, and Spain. Since 2022, he has been the leader of the research program Ethnological Research of Cultural Knowledge, Practices, and Forms of Sociality, which brings together more than 20 researchers, and has received the highest AAA rating in 2025 pilot evaluation of research programs at the University of Ljubljana. He has been a member of several research projects, including the CHANSE project DigiFREN (2022-2025) and the ERC project DEAGENCY (2023-2028). He was a principal investigator of the bilateral research project entitled Art in the Diaspora: An Anthropological Research of Creativity among Slovenians in Argentina and Return Migrants (2015-2017, with the University of Buenos Aires).

He was a mentor to young researcher Dr. Ana Svetel and several other doctoral students at the University of Ljubljana. He was also a member of doctoral dissertation evaluation committees at the University of Ljubljana, the University of Nova Gorica, the University of Alicante, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the University of Buenos Aires. Between 2019 and 2020, he was a visiting professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has also lectured at several other foreign universities (University of Buenos Aires, Miguel Hernández University of Elche, University of Bern, University of Vienna, Université Lumière Lyon 2, Reykjavik University, University of Zadar, etc.).

Awards

- First prize from the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Slovenians Abroad and Around the World for the best doctoral, master's, and bachelor's theses, 2007.

- ARRS Award for Excellence in Science, Excellence in Humanities for 2016, for the edited volume Moving places: Relations, Return and Belonging, coedited with Nataša Gregorič Bon and published by Berghahn Books.

- Mentor of Alina Bezlaj's master's thesis "Ballymun is me Heart": Place-Making in a Dublin Suburban Community, 2023, which received the Prešeren Award from the University of Ljubljana.
