Asst. Prof. Dr. Ana Svetel

Ana Svetel, born in 1990 in Maribor, is an Assistant Professor of cultural and social anthropology. She graduated from the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology in 2012 with a thesis on Multiculturalism in Norway, earned her master’s degree in 2016 with a dissertation titled Names Between Invention and Convention: Naming Practices among Mixed Families in Iceland, and completed her PhD in 2023 with the research Weather, Time, Light, and Darkness in Social Dimensions of Icelandic Landscape.

She is the author of the scholarly monograph Changing Landscapes of Northeast Iceland: Weather, Time, Light, and Darkness (2024, University of Ljubljana Press) and co-editor of the volume Sensory Environmental Relationships: Between Memories of the Past and Imaginings of the Future (2023, Vernon Press). For the latter, she and Assist. Prof. Dr. Blaž Bajič were awarded the faculty recognition Excellent FF (Odlična FF). In 2022, she was also recognized with the Emerging Scholar Award by the international network On Sustainability.

Her research focuses on anthropological studies of the environment, landscape, temporality, atmospheres, and language; with a regional focus on northern Europe and the Slovenian Alps.
