In the first year of study the course is presented primarily from the methodological aspect presenting selected approaches in visual anthropology. It focuses on use of photography, film video and drawing in research, as documentation and for presentation. It offers an idea of visual in culture on the example of graffiti. It considers the use of visual in social media. It briefly presents the use of audio-visual media in museums and selected options of visual digital applications. It presents an insight on development of visual anthropology, on the bases of selected cases from the history of the field (ethnographic film and its relation/distinction from other forms of documentary filming), photography from colonial to participatory, indigenous media) in the world and in Slovenia. Similarities and differences between ethnographic film and other documentary forms of film are presented. Students get ethical guidelines for using visual research tools.
Practical courses complement lectures and are oriented practically, most of the exercises are done during practical courses, in the class or outside. The student is getting basics of technical and knowledge about photographing with digital camera. S/he is learning how to use an android phone as a basic tool for visual and audio notes for fieldwork. S/he is learning how to organise and classify photographs. S/he is learning how to use found and archive photographs in conversation and how to use participatory photography. S/he is learning the basics of using photography in presentation, text or as photo-story. S/he tries to use a drawing as documentation and note, possibly also as presentation. Tries out use of android phone for making filed video recordings. Reflets the use of photography and video in social media, uses selected social media to publish own material. Learns how to apply ethical guidelines. Gets acquainted with visual aspect of selected digital applications (e.g. adding information to maps).
